The world’s rivers are under siege from brown snot. At least, that’s the term often applied to Didymosphenia geminata, a microscopic alga which forms thick mats creating a variety of environmental and economic problems. Known by the sobriquet, Didymo, this organism is clogging waterways around the world, including in the Pacific Northwest.
