A study done by the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration has concluded that salmon predation by sea lions and seals has been grossly underestimated. As once threatened populations of the pinnipeds have rebounded past pre-Colombian levels, the marine mammals’ appetite for endangered fish has become a concern. It appears that the animals may be consuming up to 40 percent of returning spring-run Chinook.
