While the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico gets most of the attention, Chesapeake Bay, (a sort of Puget Sound of the East), is host to similar effects from pollution and other depredations born of human activities. Over fished, heavy with traffic and awash in a wide range of pollutants, Chesapeake Bay is a failing ecosystem. Now a researcher has thrown some light on the mechanisms involved and proposed that the embattled oysters, native to the bay, could hold the answer to reversing the bay’s decline.
