You’ve doubtless seen the staggering estimate of 8-million tons of plastic figured to be washing into the world’s oceans every year, (though estimates range as high as almost 13-million). The magnitude of the mess, and the magnitude of its effects on the marine environment, ecosystems and food webs is only beginning to be fully grasped. Plastic, the darling of the disposable age, may be choking the life out of many marine ecosystems. The BBC has some very good coverage: http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-31432515
And National Geographic has coverage that includes a good graphic of the plastics’ origins: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2015/02/150212-ocean-debris-plastic-garbage-patches-science/
In all of this, one could almost miss the fact that this massive amount of plastic waste is only 5 percent of the total plastic discards generated each year.
