For over a half-century, Yellowstone’s pristine waters have been off limits to boats. The ban was originally put in place to protect imperiled fish populations. The fish are no longer in danger, and many are calling for the proscription on paddlers plying the park’s waters to end. Some conservationists contend the impacts of such use preclude it from an appropriate management plan. The battle lines are drawn, this time between groups which are normally close allies.
