A century ago mired motorists were, reportedly, often forced to endure the taunt, “Get a horse!” When, recently, an 18-wheeler got stuck in mud in Louisiana and threatened to topple, elephants were the beasts of choice to save the day. Recent rains had saturated the ground, and when the driver pulled onto the road’s shoulder the vehicle became stuck and the rig began to list toward the ditch. In a bit of good fortune, the truck’s load happened to include a couple plucky pachyderms. They were quickly pressed into service and propped the vehicle up until help could arrive.
