Sea star wasting disease has recently had a catastrophic effect on starfish populations along the West Coast. Now there is growing evidence that the virus which causes the deadly disease may be shifting its attack to the stars’ echinoderm cousins, sea urchins. While definitive answers aren’t in yet, observations off the Southern California coast are giving rise to concerns and speculation.
