The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in conjunction with NASA, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Geological Survey, has announced a new initiative to  provide the public with an “early warning system” alerting people of toxic, freshwater algal blooms. Using satellite data color analysis of water bodies, the new system will pass notification to local authorities so that they might inform the public. Toxic algal blooms can damage ecosystems and even kill people and animals which come in contact with the infested waters.
