Neonicotinoids Thought to Intoxicate Bees
Researchers have found evidence that bees prefer food contaminated with neonicotinoids over the same food that was clean. It is thought that the pesticides have a similar intoxicating effect on the bees as nicotine has on humans, leading to the preference. Neonicotinoids Dramatically Harmful to Wild Bees
A recently published study has concluded that neonicotinoid insecticides are profoundly damaging to populations of wild bees. While much of the study on these pesticides has focused on domesticated European honey bees, it has long been thought that they also pose a danger to wild bees. Now researchers have confirmed the destructive effects neonicotinoids have on wild bee populations. When added to the habitat loss such bees have suffered at the hands of development and intensive farming practices, it’s a one-two punch threatening their survival. Oregon Legislators Protest Nestlé Water Deal
In a prior post we noted that the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife had made arrangements to transfer water rights to the City of Cascade Locks in an attempt to avoid a review considering the public interest, all in an effort to speed up the siting of a bottled water plant by food processing giant Nestlé. Some Oregon legislators are now voicing displeasure at the maneuver.
