New Drilling Planned Near BP’s Gulf Spill Site
A Louisiana oil company, LLOG Exploration Offshore LLC , is pursuing plans to site a deep-water oil drilling operation close to where BP’s Deepwater Horizon disaster took place. Besides the location, there are a number of other troubling similarities between the two projects. U.S. News and World Report has the story: http://www.usnews.com/news/business/articles/2015/05/12/plan-okd-to-drill-into-bps-ill-fated-macondo-reservoir

A “Substantial” El Niño Said Brewing
While NOAA had announced in April that a weak El Niño was forming in the Pacific, Australian meteorologists are now saying that the event looks to be headed toward something stronger. Given the effects the El Niño event is thought to have on world, and particularly, North American weather, this is causing some concern. West Antarctica Said to be Losing Ice Faster
Word from a new study on Antarctic ice loss indicates that the continent is losing ice ever faster from the western part of its ice sheet. New data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) project has allowed more accurate measurements than have previously been available. It also appears that global warming is having somewhat different effects on the western, as opposed to the eastern regions of the ice sheet. The Guardian has the details: http://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-consensus-97-per-cent/2015/may/11/ice-loss-in-west-antarctica-is-speeding-up

A Collection of Wildlife Cams
Explore.org has a nice collection of, among others, live wildlife webcams. It is, of course, nesting season for many bird species, and a prime time to peek in on nest life. Try this view of a long-eared owl nest, in Montana (note: the camera seems to move and focus somewhat randomly, so your mileage may vary at different times): http://explore.org/live-cams/player/long-eared-owl-cam
